There's definitely parts in 3 that I liked, but too much of the main story felt like a filler. Which is nothing new for Nippon Ichi games, especially for Disgaea and anything else with a Netherworld setting (I wouldn't be surprised if D4 suffers it too). Problem with most of them I think is that they spread themselves way too thin and when they finally need to seriously buckle down it's already on the last chapter or so. Making the main story mode longer would probably fix this a lot, which is what I always hoped for in future games (after all you got a 9999 level cap yet post game generally starts at around 100, what's the big hurry there?). Yet they still have never done it :|
Basically D3 didn't really seem like it use its time all that wisely imo, less than what they usually do. Though I think Makai Kingdom is still the worse. I loved the concept behind the Heart Bank and how it more or less explains why demons are typically 'evil' (even if it's only for that verse). And I'd admit that I thought the whole ordeal with Mao, Mao's inner demons, his dad, and Aurum was somewhat interesting too, even though it was extremely predictable once all the cards were on the table and it's not all that original either.
The school setting I was always kinda mixed about since while it was something different for once and kinda cool in that respect, after awhile it just seemed overly pointless and mostly just a distraction. Especially when the whole point of it was never actually attend it, even if that was part of the gag. Also when you start having dialogue like 'it's the most fearsome thing in the world, a senior!', you.. kinda just lost some intimidation points there.
I was also pretty disappointed that the whole thing with Almaz and Mao going through a personality swap was barely played on too. I remember that was one of the things that really had my interest about D3 when reading bits about it so when it was only actually used like once it was a bit saddening. A temporary evil Almaz would've been so cool, or something ;o;
But yes! R-rambling again XD;; Still liked the game over all, just thought it could've been waaaay better than it turned out to be. Nothing fanworks and RP can't somewhat fix, but still.
