As promised, the latest novel has been scanned for your viewing pleasure. Unfortunately, due to me missing an HP program that I used to fix my scans for some reason, the quality of my scans won't be as great as previous releases. Sorry about that.

As for the contents, it's for the most part a straight adaptation of the game. Sadly, unless it's in the text, there are no cameos from novel-verse cast, so we don't get to see Shas meet Sicily or Ozonne react to Laharl-chan. Either the novel is following the game and having it set three years after Disgaea 1 (Thus placing it before all novels after Enter the Maoh) or Sow Kamishiro was all "Screw it. I'm not gonna even bother attempting continuity with the rest of the light novels." Also, while there are more images than some of the previous light novels (7 vs the 4-5 of most novels after Brave and the Maoh), the novel does away with chapter breaks so no more Next Episode segments or anything similar from the previous novels. That said, more Chou Niku art is welcome, especially when it's not so fan-servicey Looking at you, Disgaea 4 manga.

Yeah, it really is nice to see some Chou Niku art that doesn't involve clothing being ripped off. ...Which is why it's ironic to me he seems to have missed some rips in Laharl-chan's pants. |Da

Hmmm... I had a go at trying to smooth them out a bit, but unfortunately just too low res and lacking descreening to do much with. :(

So... I'm actually pondering picking this one up myself. I've been thinking of starting to grab up the novels just cause anyways, so might as well start with this one. XDa Then it could have a date with my scanner~ X3 (Taiga picked up the Makai Kingdom Character Collection at Anime North, so I scanned it before she left my place... was quick scans but learned a few things. ^.^ Now I wanna scan all the things. lmao ) No copies yet up on ebay though, so I'm not really sure where to go from there. XDa Where did you get your copy from, Burnfist? =Oa

As for where I got them, there's a Japanese bookstore nearby where I can request them to order it for me and then I'd pick it up when it comes in which allows me to bypass the ridiculous shipping cost of normally buying it online.

If you look on HP's site for Drivers and Software for your scanner, they might well have the scanning software there. Or else I know there are some pretty decent freeware scanning programs... my dad was using one for awhile, but I don't recall what it was called. lol

How I scanned Taiga's book was to scan at 600dpi (aka damn big, but really makes a difference) with Descreening set to Fine Print which I think is 175 lpi. Also wanna keep any sharpen mask set down to low or mid. Leaves you with a much better scan that then can be further de-noised in photoshop very easily. (Also tried this last night on that scan in Gimp, and did seem to even more get rid of any remaining patterning. Have to play with it more.)

...Reminds me, I should try running some of Dulce's recent scans through that... hm. (I was helping her figure out descreening and stuff when she was scanning the Harada Artworks book. ^.^ )

Anyhoo, tl;dr, if you can get a few ridiculously huge scans, with some descreening on and lower the sharpening a bit... I can even take care of the rest. :3b

And oh man... that's handy! lol Whelp. Guess I'm on my own then for this. XD

...Whelp. De-noise, shoving up the remove colour noise very high in photoshop... then G'Mic'd it in GIMP... though didn't go crazy like the example does... dotted the dots. Then back to Photoshop for lil' more de-noise, then levels and sharpened!

I need to finish fixing one of her scans... she scanned the picture of Marona with everyone in her skirt. Book moved when she did though so had lots of wiggles in the scan. lol Been repairing it. Almost done~ Cause we've NEVER had a large scan of that, so wanted to fix it. XD

About as good as I could manage, given it had some wicked patterning, but not too shabby. :O Easily to finish cleaning that with my tablet in photoshop. Lot easier than how I used to smooth out her scans. |D /used to spend HOURS smoothing them with smudge and almost repainting them haha

Back then, I had an HP scan previewer program that had an autofix option that made the images look a little sharper and the colors didn't fade as much (Thus the better quality between some of the later scans). I personally don't have the skill to make images look really good so it helped. Unfortunately, it seems that program is now missing through either an update that I wasn't aware of or something and I can't get it back. Downloading Photosmart Essential didn't help because A) It automatically switches to Japanese for some reason and B) uses the generic preview program that only has brightness and contrast. It's replacement, Photosmart Creations, doesn't help either because while it has the option to autofix, I can't export the image from the program. So sadly this is best I can do for now.

If you want specific scans with much higher resolution to edit, though, I can probably provide that.

Ahhh I see! I've never used an HP scanner, so I don't know much about it's software. I keep going for Epson these days. lol

Oh man, yeah! If you can even manage to scan some at higher res and can even just find the scanner's setting to turn down the sharpening (sometimes settings like that are hidden in an "advanced" mode) cause it seems to be realllly sharpening the scans, that would be AWESOME! :D I could definitely finish adjusting them from there.

As for what pages... I'm just thinking the 4 colour images. :) Looking at the B&W ones, I think those can be fixed up a bit easier... helps Chou Niku's gone for such a thick inked style lately. ^.^

Unfortunately, I can't do anything about sharpening. The scanning program is completely generic, especially compared to the old HP program. Just brightness, contrast, resolution, and color palette. I've check for any other features and there's sadly nothing.

Also, about getting the novels, you can probably look around online somewhere but let me make this clear -- DO NOT get it from Amazon.jp! There was one time I was feeling a little lazy and planned on getting it off Amazon.jp. The light novels are about $10 without shipping. Shipping from Amazon.jp brought it to $40. I've bought doujinshi through several deputy services and I've never seen shipping that ridiculous. Needless to say, I cancelled my order and decided that being lazy wasn't worth $30.

Huuuuuh... that's depressing! Hm... Dad uses something called Vuescan but turns out he paid for it. Must be something out there that could give you more options. Humhum...

And oh WOW. Yeah, in poking around I saw mention of that. *Crazy*. Yeah, definitely wasn't looking at Amazon, cause screw that. XD

Actually... Do you remember exactly what the original HP software was called? Maybe I can hunt it down for you, if you can recall. :3 What model your scanner is could help too. XD

*Edit* Poking around HP's driver site... looks like while they've updated the software downloads for Win7 ...If you go to like the Vista link, it's an older software link. Might be able to find your older software that way? :Oa

You thankfully won't need to. I had everything completely re-scanned after having found the programs. What happened was that the last time I scanned something was about two years ago and I switched laptops sometime afterwards which I completely forgot about. I eventually updated my drivers, but the windows 7 driver did not have the scanning program that I used to use thus why I had minimal options. Thankfully, I was able to get the old vista driver and everything that I needed was in place. Thank you SO much for helping me figure it all out!

Oh man, thank you for the scans! <3 I've spent last few hours seeing what I could do, but haven't had much luck yet. :/a (At least without turning them into a blurry sad mess lol) Your scanner is a little too good at picking up moire and noise, it seems. ah ha XDa I'll play around a little more though!
