Disgaea 2 Vol. 4: The Good Ending and the Invasion from Disgaea 3 (Chapter 7 plus Bonus Chapters)

[livejournal.com profile] burnfist23(15 November 2008 @ 10:42 pm): I promise it'll all be up Thursday night.

[livejournal.com profile] burnfist23(Right now): ...close enough. Thursday night, Saturday night...it's all the same, right?

Regardless, I apologize for taking so long. While I have been busy, part of the reason why it took so long to upload everything was because I went back and cleaned up all the scans. You'll especially notice the change if you compare the scans in full manga .zip to my previous posts.

Anyway, the Disgaea 2 manga is now coming to a close, so let's check on our favorite couple and get my final thoughts out of the way.

All scans from chapter 7 and 8 are available in a .zip file in the sendspace link I provided, while 41 scans from both chapters are available under the cut. Finally, I have provided a second sendspace link, but that link contains all eight chapters of Volume 4, which have been cleaned up for your viewing pleasure. As always, everyone is free to use any of the scans I provided as long as I am credited for it. If anyone wants me to upload the .zip onto another file storage site or wish for specific scans in higher quality, please let me know.

Complete Chapter 7&8 scans:

And now my comments...

Photobucket
As we come toward the end of the manga, Rozalin spends some time in silence, praying for Fake Zenon, happy that he smiled at her in his final moments. Adell, however, cannot share the same sentiments. What he did to Veldime can't be forgiven overnight.

Photobucket
But it doesn't mean Rozalin condones Zenon's actions, and at the very least, with Zenon gone, the curse will no longer be in effect, and everyone will slowly turn back to normal. That reason alone is enough to satisfy Adell.

Photobucket
Okay, so what's Rozalin crying about now? Well, if my guess is right and Hekaton made Rozalin and the real Overlord Zenon to be the same rather than two different sides, then she's probably talking about how she's always been alone as both a Princess locked away from the outside world and as an Overlord in her past life who knows nothing but solitude.

Photobucket
But she's not alone anymore. Not with Adell being around to hug her, cuz hugging Rozalin is definitely his style.

Photobucket
...and the rest of Veldime watching the two hug...

Photobucket
Hugging and inner monologues. We all know what's going to happen.

Photobucket
Lol, Laharl just can't wait to get out of there. Too bad cuz Flonne's going to keep him right there so he can see it all unfold. And now, the moment you've all been waiting for...

Photobucket

Photobucket
Laharl: NO, SCREW YOU, LOVE FREAK! I DON'T WANT TO SEE IT!
Geez, did that one kiss scene increase Hanako's JM by that much? Aw, don't cry, Friday. I'm sure you'll find someone else some day...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
Lol, Adell and Rozalin's faces...er...lack of faces is priceless. Hekaton had to even etch in their names just so we could tell them apart. Gotta love Axel, though, for getting Veldime in on the action. Oh right, it's THAT time again. *sigh* 3...2...1...

Photobucket
*sigh* I guess we can't end this manga without Axel getting his daily punch, can we?

Photobucket
And now all is good. Axel is officially the biggest name in Veldime after that stunt he pulled. Don't ask about Pleinair, though. I have no idea what the whole free fall thing was about. Moving on, Yukimaru introduces everyone to Fubuki.

Photobucket
Definitely an improvement over the game. I don't know how Mama and Papa knew that the masks belonged to Shura and Serion, but it definitely gives us a sense of closure since now Adell knows that his parents didn't abandon him and were willing to risk their life for him all the way to the very end. Finally, the Disgaea Trio are ready to leave, but with Hanako joining them, it looks like it won't be just a trio for long...

Photobucket
And so we jump ahead some time later and...*sigh* I miss the horns, the third eye, and the pimple already...

Photobucket
Anyway, Adell got a letter from Hanako. After Zenon's curse was lifted, Yukimaru and Fubuki have pretty much been chilling with Adell's family. Tink, I have no idea what's going on or why he's encased in ice. Regardless, it looks Hekaton isn't going to show us humanoid Tink. As for the Disgaea Trio, well, that kiss hasn't changed a thing between Laharl and Etna. The two are still fighting over sweets. The only difference now is that Flonne is no longer the only one watching the two fight.

Photobucket
Oh Hanako, you really want a hug, don't you?

Photobucket
But at least she's doing fine, and so is Rozalin from the looks of it.

Photobucket
Adell: OMG RAPE!
It's almost hilarious how it was the exact opposite in the game and light novels with Adell coming out and kissing Rozalin.

Photobucket
But it looks like Rozalin is telling Adell that just as much as it doesn't matter that she's Overlord Zenon, it doesn't matter that he's a demon or not. It doesn't change the fact that she loves him. And with those words and one final kiss, Disgaea 2 comes to a close.

And now for the bonus chapter...

Photobucket
Yeah, I know it's been posted before, but hey, it's for the sake of completeness.

Photobucket
That is just plain awesome, Adell. You gotta tell people how you're able to get a giant boulder to spin on your finger.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
Say hello to your successor, Adell!

Photobucket
Presenting the cast of Disgaea 3!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
Rozalin: On second thought, maybe we should be glad we're not in Disgaea 3...

Photobucket
Laharl: WTF Disgaea 3!?

Photobucket

Photobucket
And cut! That's a wrap! With Disgaea 2 over, everyone has some time to celebrate. Man, I can't imagine Zenon's reaction to his daughter now that she's really clingy to Adell. And again, poor Friday.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Flonne: Hm? What have you got there, Laharl?

Photobucket
From the looks of it, Laharl has gotten access to Hekaton's next work and now he and Etna want to see if it'll be starring the trio. Unfortunately, like Asagi, they can keep dreaming.

Final Thoughts:
What can I say that I haven't said already? This entire manga was just spectacular overall and pretty much trumps the game. Like Arashi Shindo's Disgaea manga, Hekaton's Disgaea 2 manga condenses much of the plot, but like Arashi Shindo, the liberties Hekaton took with the plot was at least interesting and touches up on some of the threads that the game left hanging.

That isn't to say that the manga is perfect. My big disappointment was obviously Rozalin's character taking a dive. It's not that I don't hate her in the manga, but Rozalin was a really likeable character in the game. Yeah, she's snobby and wants the world to know she's Zenon's only daughter, but as the game progressed, she came off stronger, especially in episode 4 and 5. In fact, that's another disappointment of mine since those two episodes really captured Rozalin dedication to Taro. You gotta love her for going out of her to get him and Hanako back. In the manga, she was downgraded into pretty much a damsel-in-distress-who-cries-a-lot. Perhaps I overexaggerated it or there's good reason for her to cry and I just need a translation to get it, but there was just way too much of it. Not saying that she can't cry cuz she do so in the game, but it really is a little too much. Along those lines, there's also the total lack of Rozalin as Zenon. Like I said earlier, it might have to do with Hekaton making Zenon and Rozalin the same person rather than different sides, but Hekaton could've definitely taken the time to show a little more of her because the game really left us in the dark about who Zenon really was aside from being a being of solitude and the manga isn't that much better in that regard. I definitely needed a real flashback of Zenon and Fake Zenon fighting. Finally, everyone who was considered a side character was completely reduced to becoming almost nonexistant, especially Tink and Fubuki. In the case of Tink, I guess they needed him as a chew toy/punching bag, but the two pages Fubuki spent showing himself could've been taken out altogether without ruining the plot. Two pages that could've been used to make the Adell vs Zenon fight even better or show more of the real Zenon. The only good thing that really came out of those two pages was more Yukimaru and Asagi.

But even with all that, the manga overall is definitely much better than the game, the big improvement being Adell. To tell truth, Adell in the manga and Adell in the game probably aren't as different as we make them out to be, but I guess the limitation of the game is this: Adell's style is something that has to be shown, not told. Because Adell's style seems to really come out more during battle, it's almost understable why the game failed to bring out Adell's character since you're the fighting the battle and the plot only develops afterwards. And because the sprites and character cuts can only show so much, it's no wonder Adell came off as bland. Laharl and Mao are able to get away with it because of the way they interact with all the other characters and they both have some genius lines, but Adell's character really is more based on actions than words, which Hekaton takes advantage of. Adell, especially in the last two volumes, really comes off as a much stronger character. Though he pretty much lost his two big battles, he at least shows that he's always willing to fight to the very end and he does it with style, especially his battle with Etna. The way he counters her twice in that battle was just plain awesome. Still, even with the limitations of the game, the manga does justice to Adell by really getting into why he wants Veldime to return to normal. I remember arguing with a GameFAQs user who hated Adell and one of his reasons for hating him was because he saw Adell's desire to change Veldime back as a selfish dream, especially since the original Disgaea taught us that all demons aren't evil and all humans aren't good. Understandable, but my argument was that Adell was fighting more to prevent all the humans from becoming total monsters and the manga brings that out perfectly with both his flashback to Mama and Papa's transformation and his nightmare. It's not really that he hates demons but it's the fact that on the day the curse spread, the people who took care of him suddenly lost all sanity and wanted to kill him. It's only a miracle that they were able to resist or that the curse wasn't strong enough to completely transform them, and Adell does not want that to happen for both his sake and the sake of his family. And that's what his style boils down to: the willingness to protect and fight for others, and the manga pulls of his style perfectly.

Of course, it's not just Adell's character that improved. While Fake Zenon really isn't that much different either, I like how Hekaton made him a little more fatherly and less of a douche waiting to be beaten at the end of the game since it gives us a better sense of his character and closure when he finally passes away. I mean, he's clearly out for revenge by isolating Rozalin for what she did to him as Zenon, but you have to wonder why he would still get his sworn enemy gifts? Adell in the game thought it was petty for him to give Rozalin gifts and not his whole heart, but it does make sense why Zenon did so in the manga. Though he's still pissed off and willing to isolate Rozalin, he really saw her as his daughter over time. Otherwise, he wouldn't have had those awesome reactions or smiled at her in his final moments.

Hekaton also manages to still tie Disgaea 1 back into Disgaea 2 without giving up on Disgaea 2. Honestly, that's part of the reason why sequels following a different main character sometimes suck since there's no balance between the previous cast and the main plot and the game was no different in that regard. I mean, we've all heard it before from so many people that Disgaea 2 should've been more like Disgaea 1. Now Hekaton never once gives up on the plot of Disgaea 2, but he at least weaved in the Disgaea 1 cast in such a way that they aren't just a bunch of cameos yet they don't steal the show. Hekaton was kind enough to start the Disgaea 2 manga with Etna leaving Laharl's castle, and it was really nice of him to tie that back in toward the end with Laharl and Flonne showing up at the tournament. Their appearance might not be completely relevant, but at least it wasn't just some random appearance just to say that they're in the manga. Plus, you gotta love the way Hekaton handles them (From Etna's battle with Adell to Laharl and Flonne bursting into the arena. Oh and I'm not gonna touch the kiss scene)

Finally, overall plot is much more smoother despite being condensed at the end. The four volume length allowed the story to develop in ways Arashi Shindo couldn't do with his one volume Disgaea manga, yet the condensing allowed Hekaton to take out some parts that I thought would be a little harder to put in story-wise. I mean, we miss out on river and cave scenes in episodes 4 and 5, but I always thought it would be difficult to write in Etna's level drop and Laharl showing up on Shinra Tower, not to mention Zenon having to deal with all the other Ovelords showing up at his doorstep. Though a little more than half the game is condensed into one final volume, it was really difficult to see that half of the game being put into the manga, so I'm happy to see that Hekaton does skip all that and focus solely on Adell and Rozalin and gives us some real laughs with all the fanservice. And of course, we can't forget about the AdellxRozalin development. Yeah, it's clear that Hekaton seriously ships AdellxRozalin, but like I said before, there's a much stronger development of their bond here. Though we get the typical "No we don't like each other!" thrown around, you can see their feelings for each other develop over the course of the manga. Though I'd like to it develop without Rozalin crying, they aren't just paired like in the game and the way it ends with their relationships was a lot more beautiful. Yeah, Rozalin trying to shoot Adell's head off for kissing her is hilarious, but it makes for such an abrupt ending. The two coming to terms with their feelings for each other and finally kissing is definitely the much better ending.

So yeah, it's been one long ride, especially for me staying up till like two in the morning scanning everything. Still, I've had fun taking jabs at the scenes in the manga and it was worth sharing this with all of you. I appreciate all the comments. This was all really worth effort.

UPDATE: Yeah, I'm pissed too about Broccoli shutting down. I'll probably be scanning volume 3 again in the near future, but let's hope Broccoli at least gives us volume 3 before it's dissolution.

In other news, my final comments and thoughts on the entire manga are up.

+1 to Hekaton

thanks again now i can finally get some sleep

Wow, ha ha ha, that Rozalin and Adell kiss scene sure is....
Rozy you're not very shy at all there are you!?

Though I adore the hand-holding that accompanies the final kiss. SO ROMANTIC.

Huh, no scenes of Tink's real form? And no scenes of human Hanako either? (Does going to Laharl's Netherworld let her retain her demonic form in this manga, I wonder? I know we see her human in the novels...)

And is it just me, or does Adell's ahoge seem to be far more tame like his dad's hair in those final pages? A SIGN OF A REAL MAN??

i don't know. I'm very happy we have this manga, four volumes is more than I ever thought we'd get compared to the first game's single one. At the same time, well, ha ha ha I've bitched enough, whatever. If it told the exact same story as the game, it'd be boring anyway!

As always, thank you for the scans. ♥

[identity profile] yuriranch.livejournal.com 2008-11-23 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, yes, that ending is pretty romantic and I like that better than the game's version. Adell and Rozalin really are just so freaking cute together.

Hurray for whole volume pack, thanks for taking the time to scan it!

oops rp account

Wow... that was AWESOME. Man. VERY romanic kissing there. *A*

Lol Laharl got his eyebrows back, whut.

Haha I can't wait to see all these translated. *___*

Could be a bit of an important notice to everyone---

Thank you so much for scanning these-- Especially since I got news in my inbox the other day from the Anime Corner Store that Broccoli Books will soon be no more... Here's the copypasted excerpt, for those who want it:

"Broccoli Books Shutting Down

Shizuki Yamashita announced this week that Broccoli International USA will be shut down and dissolved at the end of the year. This includes Broccoli Books and the Shonen Ai imprint Boysenberry, which previously published the Manga titles Aquarian Age: Juvenile Orion, Digi Charat Theater, Galaxy Angel, Galaxy Angel II, Disgaea, Kamui, Sola, Nui!, Murder Princess, Es, and several others. This also finally puts their DVD division Sync-Point to bed, and eliminates the possibility that there will be any future releases of the FLCL unless another firm picks up the license.

Yamashita made an appeal in a blog post that the US rights to their books will revert back to Japan, and some of these titles could be rescued by the other US Manga companies if they move quickly. Personally, I wouldn't bet on it. The wholesale division will also be closed, and was one of the last US based sources of imported books and unique Japanese merchandise sold by many small (um, that's not us) Anime retailers. They have been busy liquidating their inventory since the beginning of September, sending us daily e-mails offering us blocks of unsold merchandise priced as low as .05 cents on the dollar, so this announcement was not unexpected."

Unfortunately for us in the US, this would likely mean we won't be seeing the rest of Disgaea 3 translated... Unless someone else picks up the rights to it, that is. :< I guess only time will tell...

Anyhow, thank you so much once more, for the scans..! ♥

Re: Could be a bit of an important notice to everyone---

[identity profile] ghostmuffin.livejournal.com 2008-11-23 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, I was thinking of posting this to the main Disgaea community--- Just to give everyone a bit of a heads-up. You think that'd be a good idea...?

Re: Could be a bit of an important notice to everyone---

[identity profile] ghostmuffin.livejournal.com 2008-11-23 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll get to it, then. :<

Isn't it outrageous?! I can't believe it myself. I have to wonder if the company is just gonna be up and gone NOW, or if we're gonna manage to at LEAST get the english copy of volume 3 out over here.. Though it's seeming rather unlikely... *sigh*

Sorry for this grim bit of news, but, I figured it would be good if everyone knew.

Well, at least for the manga, someone could always scanlate them, so it's not so bad, even if it's dissapointing.

But this pretty much destroys our chances of getting the novels.

Re: Could be a bit of an important notice to everyone---

[identity profile] ghostmuffin.livejournal.com 2008-11-23 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn, that is true... I hadn't even thought of that, even though I have been checking the stores for the novel which was supposed to be out MONTHS back. )X

Perhaps a group like Baka-Tsuki ( http://www.baka-tsuki.net/project/index.php?title=Main_Page ) could pick them up, though? I suppose it would be our one hope left for the novels, really...

[identity profile] ofdreamsxpride.livejournal.com 2008-11-23 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Simply, awesome. Really enjoyed the scenes of Adel and Rozalin, they are just too cute together.

Thanks again for taking the time and scanning the manga! Especially with the recent annoucement and all,it makes me glad that we won't be missing out as much.

[identity profile] dollarstored.livejournal.com 2008-11-23 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
lets hope if they try to turn this into a anime also it follows this manga or hell just let Hekaton do it =).

sucks about Broccoli Books though cause I've been dying to read the novels for a good year now =(.

In regards to your final comments, gotta say I agree with a lot of things you say, especially about Adell, but there's one thing that kinda bothered me.

At the beginning, the whole deal between Etna and Laharl was that he wasn't respecting his vassals. It got worse and worse as the fight went on, and in the end, Etna and everyone in the castle left the castle because he wouldn't apologize.

Now, I found that a bit ironic considering how the Prinnies left Etna in the game because of all the mistreatment and disrespect she inflicted on them, after they realise that she became harmless. I have to admit, I'm really dissapointed that this never even had the chance to get explored in the manga, considering Etna never got depowered and all. Since there's no translation, I don't know how the whole thing got resolved, but I would have liked Etna to come to some realisation that she was doing the same thing.

Yeesh, this is why I shouldn't go on and ramble about things. XD

So am I. So am I.

[identity profile] lolidelinquent.livejournal.com 2008-11-24 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think she ever came to the realization at all in the game, so it wouldn't have made a difference unless Hekaton took that liberty to have her realize that. Besides, I like how Hekaton has Etna reconcile with Laharl right there on the pages of the manga and not make us assume she does in the game, kiss aside.
wannabe_maiden: (Huh?)

Re: So am I. So am I.

[personal profile] wannabe_maiden 2008-11-24 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, she didn't, but then again, the game never said why the two of them parted ways in the first place, so it was kinda impossible in the first place. Which was why I was curious at how it would have been handled in the manga if the two versions were mixed. Oh well, instead we get to see major ass kicking, so it's all good... kiss aside.

Volume 3?

[identity profile] mewpudding101.livejournal.com 2009-07-25 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much for posting this! Now that Broccoli has said that they're not releasing volume 3, will you please post it in zip form? :3 Thank you for scanning, even if you can't put the 3rd on.
