FUNimation to release Disgaea anime in 2011

Please forgive any posting errors, as this is my first time posting to LJ. >3<;

It seems that FUNimation acquired the rights to the Disgaea anime. The first dubbed episode is available to watch online.
You can read more about it here, it's a rather short post:

I'm kind of surprised, since it's already been released and all.. perhaps it's because NIS is in a tight spot?
If this needs to be cut or anything,  please let me know.

o3o

Well, since Geneon closed it US side the anime has been very scarce, so I guess this is kinda good.

... Aside from the very obvious fact about the anime, I'm happy to see Funi getting it and releasing it. Did they redub it or just release it as is? I'd see for myself if I could actually WATCH these videos online anymore.

Oh, I've been wondering about that, since the Suncoast here still has the same 6-7 copies of volume 2, and none of the other two. And it's been like this for well over a year.

So Funi's getting pretty much everything these days, huh...I don't see much point in this being dubbed again, it's hardly a high profile anime.

lol i watched the first 10 minutes nothings been changed.. thats really cool that they plan to rerelease it though for those who dont own it but im kinda upset to see that NIS sold the rights to anything Disgaea

Well, I'm probably the only one who likes the Disgaea anime (and even then not every episode) but I don't see the sense in redubbing it.

I can't watch it at the moment, but if they did actually redub it, it wouldn't make much sense to me! The VAs are the same from the game, changing them would just be weird. D:

Perhaps it's merely a redistribution? As far as I know, it wasn't a very high profile release. (Though I have all 3 DVDs >w>)

haha i've always liked the Disgaea anime

yea they could have done alot more with it...but i'm definitely satisfied with it. i mean atleast them walking around the netherworld is more interesting then them beginning every episode in the castle warping everywhere.

ill stop here though..

Indeed! And...people are going to HATE me for this, but I LOVE the fact that Flonne was the one who found Laharl. I do, I make no apologies. It was super cute. *w*

It was just...a fun anime, I think. And we even got to see Maharl, who was cut from the game! :D

[identity profile] arbalest-bolt.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Same for me! I had gotten 2 first, and this was the point in time before they had ported Disgaea 1 for every system ever, so it was still pretty rare! The anime is special to me! =w=

That's odd...I'm curious how much of the anime they'll change as far as VAs go and whether or not they'll keep the majority of the original actors from the game.

One change I want to see, though; Bobcat Goldthwait as Vyers. Oh yes.

Hey everyone * long time lurker and fan of Disgaea * and the surrounding games*
What they really need to focus on instead of selling and re-releasing it, is to make another anime, this time with a better animation teem (Genon BUTCHERED Harada's work, dunno which in house studios worked on that, but they need to hang it up). They should try to get Gainax, Madhouse, or Bones.
Hell even I could have done a better job.

And they need to actually give us either a decent account of the game, or a new adventure all together, instead of giving us a crappy chopped up version of the story with some lame additions.

The only good thing about that anime, was that they had the music, original VA's, and some of the humor was there.

Nis makes some pretty bad decisions.

I TOTALLY put my vote in for this. ESPECIALLY if they would do Disgaea 3. C:

Disgaea 3 would make an AMAZING anime, seriously. Makai Kingdom would probably do really well, too.

[identity profile] arbalest-bolt.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
INO, RITE?! It just needs to happen, it would be amazing. They've already teased us with the opening. WE KNOW YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN GAIZ.

And Makai would definitely make A BADASS FREAKING ANIME.

Smart move by NIS to sell the anime, but bad decision from Funi to buy it. Seriously, this has to be one of the worst video game to screen adaptations ever.

It almost seems like Ganeon made their utmost efforts to doom the series. Disgaea has pretty random humor, few hours of cutscenes, and the characters are not that hard to draw. With a little more dedication, they could have adapted the game into a good, if not at least decent anime. They should have picked Bones to do the job, or any other animation studio.

NIS should make smart use of the money it still has and focus on developing Disgaea 4 and bringing Prinny 2 over the pond, which IMO is their best bet at the moment. The company's in deep doo-doo for making poorly developed ports filled with glitches and not enough extra material to make them worth buying. Publishing constant flops from companies like Hitmaker hasn't helped matters either.

It was only licensed by Geneon. The studio that actually worked on the anime was Oriental Light and Magic. It sad though since the two trailers for the anime looked so much better than actual anime itself.

And it really had nothing to do with what they adapted but rather what they added or exaggerated (The close-up of Jennifer's breasts got stale after the second time. Blasting off like Team Rocket has been out of style for a long time. And studios shouldn't be expanding a 5 second gag like Sardia into 20+ minutes!)

I guess I'll be seeing this on the Funimation channel soon.

I'm of the belief that the company that produced the Disgaea anime literally blew their budget on the teaser trailer alone. The difference in production quality between that and the actual show (hooray, no fight scenes whatsoever!) is staggering.
