The Witch and the Hundred Knights released late last week, being Nippon Ichi's first fully 3D game and they're first Action-RPG. It's a very ambitious project, so much that they had to delay the game a while year top see if they could get it right. From the looks of things, it may have paid off. Here are the debut sales for the game (keep in mind that these are only for the first three days of sales, 7/25-7/28; these also don't count the limited edition):

Media Create: 49,209
Famitsu: 52,374 (80-100% sellthrough)

Here are some sales data from the debts if some of their other titles over the past few years (via Siliconera):

Soul Nomad & the World Eaters – 43,253
Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice – 54,596
Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? 16,240
Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! – 9,353
Last Rebellion – 3,565
Z.H.P Unlosing Ranger – 31,447
Disgaea Infinite - 2,656
Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten – 79,425
The Guided Fate Paradox - 23,417
Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness - 55,443

It appears The Witch and the Hundred Knights can be considered a success. I think we can look forward to more 3D Nippon Ichi games in the future.

The Witch and The Hundred Knights (PS3) – 8/8/8/7 [31/40]

Not bad. Pretty much within the range of most of the NI games. I do hope it does well, though, since the games they're facing are Ace Attorney Dual Destinies (Which I'm also excited for. 10/9/10/8) and Dragon's Crown (9/8/8/9). Just based on the little I've seen, there's already more depth and polish in NI's first full 3D game than what I've seen from other niche companies so I hope their efforts really pay off here.

With a week left until the release, Dengeki PlayStation gives us a new batch of screenshots for The Witch and the Hundred Knights, this time going in more depth towards some of the game's locations and mechanics, as well as a new character (forgive the wonky translation):

Locations:

Metallica's House: This is where the journey of the Knights' begins. Due to the swamp's miasma it is rendered uninhabitable to most land creatures.

Forest Ooze: A forest adjacent to Metallica's house. There are rumours that large caterpillars are attacking people who enter...

Doen: A village at the corner edge of Valentine's territory, rich with natural hills. In order to get to Valentine's territory from Metallica's Swamp, you need to go through here.

Chocolata Village : The capital of Valentine's territory. A large red-light district with very attractive residents...

Mechanics:

Predation (Quick Time Eat): The Knights' abilities consume Giga-Calories, therefore calorie supply is a serious issue. You can regain calories by eaten enemies, but in order to do that, you must first weaken them. The catch here is that the Knights' stomach also acts as an item bag, so resource management is important.

Capture: Utilizing a special bunker, you can extinguish weakened enemies by capturing said bunker. It can be used as an attack, but will also be important in collecting rare items.

A New Enemy Appears!:

Fahrenheit: A witch with an invulnerable spider-like body. You'll have to be creative in your attack variety in order to defeat her.

More screens, as well as interviews with the game's voice actors can be seen here.

The Witch and the Hundred Knights launches in Japan on July 25th.

* Mittens (VA: Saki Fujita), the Buridango insect, is introduced. These kinds of insects emit a foul odor that repels human, but Mittens apparently likes this prince and she's hoping Metallica will help her find a way to get close to him.
* Two new faucets introduced:
- Trick Screamer: I'm having a very hard time deciphering this with google translate. It sounds like it's defense isn't all that great, but you can turn enemies to your side.
- Shinobi the Assassin: An overall great offensive form in exchange for not so great defense.
* As stated in previous posts, your job is to destroy the pillars to allow Metallica to spread her influence, but they also serve as nice little checkpoints throughout the game.
* As you go through the game, you earn grade points that you can place into various different stats. If I reading this correctly, it seems like you can adjust your grade points when you're at your base, allowing you to prepare for whatever dangers you may face.
* You may encounter rare enemies called Anima during the game. They carry some really rare items, but can disappear if the fight drags on too long.
* You can ask for wishes from Metallica which allow you to change various things in the world. It's pretty much the equivalent of Disgaea's Dark Assembly.

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/07/08/these-are-your-comrades-in-nippon-ichis-next-rpg-battle-princess-of-arcadia/
* Characters:
- Plume (VA: Saori Hayami), Schwert's energetic Battle Princess. A little happy-go-lucky but very powerful and loves to fight. Wields a sword.
- Larts (VA: Atsushi Abe), Plume's squire and the straight man to the energetic princess. He wields a bow.
- Uni (VA: Hiromi Igarashi), local craftsman who builds and repairs furniture for the king. Surprisingly calm and sharp tongued in spite of the loli genki girl appearance. Wields a staff
- King Shiguto (VA: Junji Majima), king of Schwert and Plume's brother turned goose.
* Combat unfolds like you'd expect from a 2D ARPG. You're on a 2D plane fighting enemies with varying styles of combat. Plume naturally focuses on close range combos with her sword. Ratsu use his bow and arrows from afar and can pop-up enemies for juggling. Uni uses powerful magic bullets.
* As you level up, you gain more powerful techniques and depending on how well you use them, you might activate a special team finishing move.
* Limited Edition copies come with the OST.

* Introduces the fairly creature Manyi, who is said to be as arrogant Metallica, and the doll-like creature Wunderkammer (AKA Mir).
* Amongst the Hundred Knights, the Wonder Knight is the only one who work directly for Metallica. However, in a pinch (Though I don't exactly know the conditions), he can call upon the power of the other Hundred Knights to aid him in battle with some very unique abilities:
- Chibihei: Your basic ally NPC
- Chikubomb: A living bomb that can be set to destroy magical barrier and enemies.
- Diaro: A boomerang like creature that can be set and target far away enemies
- Dekoimo: A creature that likes to taunt enemies. Can be used as a decoy.
- Kyaserio: An immobile fortress will shoot down enemies in a fixed range with turrets.

Pretty much a follow-up/clarification post of the dengeki scan posted below.

* Every year, a meeting is held that gather seven witches known as the Walpurgis Soirée headed by Nezaria the Fog Witch. The witches that gather here are:
- Metallica the Swamp Witch (VA: Mariya Ise). Self-proclaimed genius witch who is looking to end her long standing conflict with the Forest Witch.
- Nezaria the Fog Witch (VA: Kaori Mizuhashi). Very quiet but holds a lot of influence over the witches.
- Purple Peel(?) the Dust Witch (VA: Naoko Matsui). A middle aged witch who has control over dust. Very blunt and brutally honest.
- Rabiri Rarura Lu the Flame Witch (VA: Saki Fujita). Nicknamed "Wallaby", has control over flames. Her magic is very powerful yet destructive and is known to make trouble.
- Velda the Lye(?) Witch (VA: Rei Matsuzaki). A meek and generally nice witch.
- Apprentice Witch Terrasa (VA: Kaori Mizuhashi). Terrasa's apprentice. Her title is apparently Witch of...Nicotine?
- Ryubensu/Rubens(?) the Pumpkin Witch (VA: Kaoru Mizuhara). Has an extensive knowledge of magic along with a pessimistic attitude and several stitches all over her body.
- Lilian the Ice Witch (VA: Tomoe Tamiyasu). Nicknamed "Lily", has a cool personality and is mindful of the environment.

* Two new weapons introduced:
- Candlestick. While the weapon itself can be used a blunt weapon, it's primarily used as a ranged magic weapon. The Candlestick's properties seem to vary from weapon to weapon as a couple screenshots show one Candlestick shooting a lightning bolt while another shoots a spread of three fireballs.
- Scythe/Double-edged Spear. Both weapons attack in a full circular motion. Apparently, the Marginal Gaze form can make good use of these weapons.

* New enemy type introduced known as the Witch Soldiers. Witch Soldiers are wild creatures created by magic. Normally, they are relatively harmless but will attack if it senses anything with traces of magic like witches and other creatures created by magic like the hundred knights. They tend to be found in dark places and can be dangerous but give a lot EXP early on.

This month's issue of Dengeki PlayStation not only gives us an update on The Witch and the Hundred Knights, but our first in-game look of Battle Princess of Arcadia.

Dengeki's info for The Witch and the Hundred Knights shows a plethora of new characters, a look at the Knight(s)'s weapon types, and a short story about Visco.

Dengeki also gives us our first look at Battle Princess of Arcadia, NIS' final Anniversary Project. Our first look gives us not only a few in-game screenshots, but also some conceptual designs for the Battle Princess herself, along with two other characters.

Credit goes to Elliot Gay (RyougaSaotome) from Japanator for the photos. twitter.com/RyougaSaotome

The Witch and the Hundred Knights will release on July 27, 2013. Battle Princess of Arcadia has no release date yet, but the website will launch on June 20th.

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/05/23/metallica-will-have-you-raiding-towns-in-the-witch-and-the-hundred-knights/
* New characters have been introduced. As the story will be about Metallica amassing territory, the article introduces another Witch named Valentine (VA: Kumiko Nakane) who is also the ruler of a nearby territory which has a red-light district, one of the finest in the world. Her magic focuses on flowers. There is another character whose name remains a mystery, but all that is known about her is that she is fat and likes to stuff her face. Valentine has her own servants known as...the Korigon Weenies (VA: Saori Sakura)
* As mentioned in previous updates, Knights' actions can affect the course of the game. Whenever you lock onto an NPC, you can check their Behavior Panel which indicates their current opinion of the Knights. If it's all green, the NPC likes you. Depending on your actions, the colors will shift. One thing that will cause this shift is Witch Domination, in which you raid a house and fight it's residents. If you win, you take possession of the house and any items they may be holding. Successive visits may give you different items. However, be warned as something awaits those who act so selfishly.
* As you go through the game, the Knights can change in appearance which affects their abilities in battle. The default form is known as the Wonder Knight, which is fairly balanced. The Power Fortress form has increased defense and can reduce damage taken from most physical attacks, but is very susceptible to magic. Finally Marginal Gaze form is strong against magic and can specialize in certain weapons.

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/04/23/nis-wanted-to-make-the-witch-and-the-hundred-knights-an-open-world-game/

Some of this will be a recap of previously released info:

* According to siliconera article, Nippon Ichi focused more on the 3D graphics. While they look goodm(Definitely the best 3D graphics from Nippon Ichi since Guided Fate Paradox), I can't help but notice that compared to the early screenshots, there's a lot more brown in the color palette. Apparently, even NI is submitting to the Real is Brown trope...
* Couple of new characters introduced. You have Metallica's butler Shimobe Arlecchino(?) the Faithful, Nezaria the Fog Witch, who is quiet but appears to hold a lot influence amongst the other witches, and Terrasa the Apprentice Witch whose master remains a mystery.
* Your item bag in this game is the Hundred Knight's stomach.
* The Hundred Knight can equip up to five weapons at a time. Each weapon has a specific property and an attribute which certain enemies are weak to. The one's shown in the article are:
- Sword: Slash type. Has decent speed and attack range.
- Hammer: Shot type. Slow and has a shorter range, but has great attack power and increased Critical Hit rate which can flinch enemies.
- Lance: Slash type. Can only attack in a straight line and a little slow, but the range makes up for it. There is also a Battering Ram, which is similar to the Lance except it has a Blow type attribute.
* If you can time your dodge just right, you activate the Mystical Dodge which grants invincibility and slows your surroundings for a limited time.
* Kill an enemy in one hit and you activate Extra Chain, which increases your characters damage output and speed. The move stacks so your damage will keep increasing as long as the next enemy dies in one hit.
* Breaking away from Metallica will deplete your Giga Calories and once it reaches zero, you're automatically forced back to your home base. You can regain Giga Calories by eating a weakened enemy.
* The Hundred Knight can activate an ability called the "Chaos Riva configuration"(?). This enhances it's current abilities and grants new abilities like firing magic bolts, but it drains your Giga Calories much more quickly and cannot be turned off. Once activated it will keep depleting your Giga Calories until it reaches zero.

* Voice cast includes:
Metallica the Swamp Witch - Mariya Ise
The Hundred Knights - Kaori Mizuhara
Shimobe Arlecchino the Faithful - Koji Yusa
Visco the Inquisitor - Ayumi Fujimura
Lana Nia Luccinia - Tomoe Tamiyasu
Nezaria the Fog Witch - Kaori Mizuhashi
